Cross Cottage Horizontal Diktat

Anarchy is order

  • These rules have been collectively decided by the current residents of Cross Cottage. They are made by free agreement and are open to change by the consensus of the residents (including future residents).

Please follow these rules before, during and after your stay.

By order of the management

  • Cross Cottage is a space to share but it is also a home – it is not a completely ‘open house’ or a hotel, although we welcome guests and visitors by prior arrangement/mutual agreement.

  • We have three double rooms and a single with twin beds at our disposal.

Please let us know at least two weeks in advance of when you would like to visit; please also let us know how long you’d like to stay and what is the start and end date (and time) of your visit. We can then cater to your circumstances, avoid disappointment, and allow time for our own needs. Do this by sending an email to: vamos@xcottage.org. Please include your arrival and departure date and time.

  • The nearest stations are Frome, Bruton or Castle Cary. The Cottage is quite isolated, so we can pick you up and drop you off at the station if you let us know when you’re arriving/departing.

  • We share the labour of running a household and the grounds. We have plenty of bedding and towels but please strip your bed and put your bedding in the laundry at the end of your visit if possible put fresh bedding at your leaving.

  • There is a list of tasks that need doing at the house – either ongoing maintenance or current projects. Many hands make light work.

  • At the Cottage, we eat together. You are very welcome to bring food to cook/prepare/share during your stay.

  • The kitchen is well equipped for culinary requirements please take care of what is there for everyone to enjoy.

If there is something you broke and cannot be fixed please consider replacing it on your next visit. Clean what you use. There are no maids or servants here.

  • Cross Cottage is a completely vegetarian and mostly vegan house (apart from our feline comrades). Please don’t bring meat to the house and be aware that you’ll only eat meat-free meals during your stay. Let us know in advance any dietary requirements or allergies.

  • The house has a washer and dryer available for full loads of washing, there are also cleaning products available, please heed the instructions and make careful use of what we have to share.

  • Stay off the socials. We’d like Cross Cottage to be one of the few spaces that exists outside of social media. Exercise your memory.

  • Cross Cottage is a non-smoking house. You’re welcome to smoke outside and there are lots of patios and outside spaces for smokers.

  • If you want to leave boots, shoes or clothes for your next visit, please let us know.

  • Cross Cottage is also the home of at least 2 cats who are in the house. Please be aware of this in case of allergies.

  • We have one bee hive close to the house in case of any allergies.

  • Please respect our neighbours, their needs and differences. Whilst we are off the beaten track, the core of the project is community – visitors to the Cottage as well as those who live and help us every day in the village and grounds. Strong communities negate the state.

Covid/Health Solidarity

  • We want to look after each other’s health by taking sensible and reasonable precautions. We’re in contact with members of the community who have health vulnerabilities – protecting them is a form of solidarity.

  • If you’re feeling unwell and suspect you may have Covid or similar symptoms, please think about your visit or let us know.

Economic Support

Every place has operating costs, here we make a great effort to provide what is necessary. A voluntary sum if you are able to contribute is £15 after 1 day of stay.

  • This corresponds to food, staying and other basic services such as energy, water, internet, council tax etc. If want to contribute in other ways, let us know and Thank you.
